Beginning this month the construction of a training institute especially made for Cambodian garment workers is now being realized. The training institute will be called Cambodian Garment Training Institute (CGTI). This is being build within the Special Economic Zone of Pnom Penh and its main mandate is to train the local workers so that they will be equipped with the necessary skills to fill the middle management positions of the clothing factories that are situated across the country. The said institution will offer different vocational training programs like specialized pattern making courses and design. The cost of enrollment will of course be paid by the employers of the workers.
As the clothing industry in Cambodia is set to expand and boom in the upcoming years, the government sees this move as beneficial to the overall economic growth of the country as well as an avenue to alleviate the conditions of the Cambodian people. These workers will be equipped with the necessary skills in making fashionable wears, top garments, t-shirts, shorts, movie costumes and so much more.
During the first year of operation, there will be around 1,600 places that will be available. The institute also announced that it will offer 12 month courses to at least 240 young university hopefuls who are eager to build a career in the clothing industry. The student applicants are privileged to choose from a spectrum of specializations including quality control, engineering as well as garment design.
The institute is being set up by the GMAC or the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia and is aided financially by the French Agency for Development (AFD). The said institute will help boost the retail industry’s competitiveness and create plenty of jobs for the Cambodian people.
The learning institution is set to train the Cambodian workers in the different sections of the clothing industry from pattern making to operating sewing machines to becoming technical specialists. The president of GMAC said that the institute will help increase the productivity of the skilled workers and at the same time reduce the dependence on foreign workers for the key technical positions and management roles in various garment companies in the country.
