Solving Aesthetic Issues Of Titanium Dental Implants

The procedure for dental implants in Reading typically starts at the dentist’s office. The patient makes an appointment with a dentist and after explaining different alternatives to replace missing teeth, dental implant is the chosen solution. Several options are available but patients are more likely to choose dental implants because they look and function like natural teeth.

Titanium is the most common material used for both medical and dental implants because it is a highly biocompatible material that can seamlessly integrate with the jaw bone.  On top of the titanium implant, a connector is placed to support the actual dental crown. According to Ole Zoffman Andersen, Research Manager of Elos Medtech that manufactures dental implant components, the connector remains an aesthetic challenge because of the metallic shine through the gums.

Researchers have developed a social solution to deliver white titanium implants so that the metal part of the implant will not shine through the gums. Roughly ten million people across the world have titanium implants and the number is still growing as the world’s population continue to grow. Many people with dental implants dislike the metal shine of the dental appliance.

During a laboratory study, DTU research group were able to whiten the surface of titanium. However, they have to develop a surface that is robust and durable so that whitening will not peel off. They also need to comply with different medical requirements.

Morten Jellesen, Senior Researcher at DTU Mechanical Engineering said that they are not sure whether the strongest whitened titanium surface was created through one or the other process or a combination of both. Their project is designed to determine which process works that will achieve excellent results.

The goal of the project is rather ambitious but once they develop the technology to whiten titanium dental implant while complying with regulatory requirements, the aesthetic issue of titanium implants will be solved.

The beautiful smiles of patients who have lost one or more teeth can be restored by dental implants in Reading using the latest in dental technology. Although the process for dental implants is longer than other dental options, it is definitely worth the wait.
