The study, which was published in the Evolution, Medicine and Public Health journal, manifested that repeated dieting can be regarded by the brain like short famines. Because of this, the brain encourages the body to store additional fat for any future shortage. This results to repeated dieters gaining more weight in comparison to those that never diet.

Professor John McNamara from the University of Bristol’s School of Mathematics explained in a press release that their model displays that weight gain is not a malfunction of people’s physiology. For the study, researchers did an analysis of mathematical models of animals, with birds as an example. These animals are aware when food is abundant and when it is also limited.
