Tortilliera Closed By Public Health Department Due To Cockroaches And Rodent Droppings

Pests like files, rodents, cockroaches and ants can cause a number of problems for food establishments. Flies can enter a restaurant while guests are entering or exiting through the open doors. Cockroaches will immediately create a wrong impression among customers. The best way to preserve the restaurant’s reputation is to call national exterminators that will ensure that the business environment is pest-free.

A tortilleria at Pico Rivera was ordered closed by Los Angeles County Public Health Department because of fresh and old rodent droppings and live cockroaches. An inspector from the health department visited the La Fortuna Tortilliera on 9237 Whittier Avenue last October 8. The inspector made a report based on his findings.

The inspector found more than 20 fresh and old rodent droppings on the floor behind the water heater and on the ledge between pipes. There were 2 live nymphs and 1 live adult cockroach on the floor behind the water heater. The tortilliera was given a score of 83 and ordered shutdown. Last October 11, it was re-inspected and allowed to reopen.

The public health department grades facilities with a number and letter score like school report cards. Once a facility is closed because of cockroach, fly or rodent infestation, sewage problems or absence of running water, 7 points are lost by the facility in addition to the 4 points deducted for major health violations. The facility losses another 3 points from its inspection score if 2 major health hazards like unsafe food temperatures are found.

When the permit of a restaurant or market is suspended, they have to close until another inspection is carried to find out whether they fixed the problems. Closures can be ordered during routine or owner-initiated inspections, investigations for complaints and re-inspections. Facilities receive their grades on the day they are ordered closed.

The best pest control services are provided by national exterminators that will strive to solve pest problems. A business must always be protected from pest situations that can cause an inspection from the public health department. Aside from pest control, exterminators will control any future threats that can compromise the health and safety of customers.
