Chinese Army Heads For Sydney Harbour For Military Exercise

Published by:

China’s People’s Liberation Army surrounded Sydney Harbour recently, not for war, but to foster cooperation between them and the Australian armed forces.

For the second time ever in history, the Australian army played host for its Chinese counterparts for team building in Australia, with the training exercise named PANDAROO.

On a cool, grey, overcast day, teams of soldiers, from Australia and China, paddled 60km down the New South Wales coast on kayaks to enter the Sydney Harbour. The weather didn’t change anything, however, as soldiers were still expected to capsize themselves into the cold Australian waters, and then cooperate in order to get themselves upright again, despite the language barrier.

Commander of the 6th Brigade, Australian Army; Brigadier Susan Doyle says that trust is the basis of militaries all around the world, built on friendships gained from such activities like adventure training for team building in Australia, and in other places. She says that the they will make friends for like, as she believes is the case with friendships born through adversity.

The People’s Liberation Army’s Ou Feng described their Aussie counterparts as brave and hardworking, saying that they teach her and the other Chinese soldiers climbing, as well as kayaking, and that the Aussie soldiers were professional and responsible throughout it all.

Operation Panderoo started in Canberra earlier in September, with a traditional welcome in Canberra, before the soldiers headed over to the Blue Mountains, for a series of rock climbs. The exercise programme places focus on basic training rather than military training, in contrast to the war games of Exercise Kakadu, which took place earlier in September in Darwin.

All these exercises for team building in Australia follows both governments’ attempts to rebuild diplomatic relations following a period of tension, with the AU’s Defence Minister Marise Payne meeting the top Chinese top diplomat on the sidelines of the United Nations meeting on the 25th of September.

Chinese media were reportedly watching Exercise Pandaroo closely, with George Yang, Chief Correspondent for Australia for HK’s Phoenix TV, saying that China-Australia relations are currently quite bumpy, which is why the Chinese media were watching the exercises.

Exercise Panderoo ended at the last week of September 2018.

Expat Students Turning To Tuition Centers

Published by:

All over the world, Singapore has been tagged as the tuition nation. In fact, surveys have shown that parents and students are spending around $1.1 billion annually enrolled in home tuition Singapore which is not surprising at all. This so-called tuition bug used to affect only the local students and parents but latest reports indicate that even international students now have tuition too.

According to different tuition agencies and centers in the country, they have seen rapid growth in the number of expat students enrolled in international schools that are going to them looking for help as they are about to their exams for International General Certificate of Secondary Education or their IB which stands for International Baccalaureate.

In an interview with the founder of a tuition agency, Mr. Rum Tan, he said that in 2014 less than 50 expat students have been enrolled in the programs in his agency. Their number is not even 5 per cent of the total number of students they have.

The exponential increase was noted starting January of 2017 until October of the same year when the number of expat students they have assigned for private tutoring reaches almost a thousand. Now their total number makes up 20 per cent of the entire client population of the tuition agency.

Majority of these expat students are from Australia and Britain and they are enrolled in schools such as Tanglin Trust Schoo, United World College South East Asia and Anglo-Chinese School which is an independent school.

A number of tuition centers and agencies have also reported that they have seen a sudden increase in the number of their expat students. The trend of supplementing regular schooling with tuition stems from the fact that there is stiff competition from the students. Both locals and expats are vying for slots in schools as well as to be able to apply in the universities they want.

These reasons alone are what drive the tuition bug even to international students. The sentiments of home tuition Singapore is that there is not enough time spent in school in order for the students to learn what they need to.
