Vernon’s Central Elementary Affected By Boiler Issues

Published by:

The students of Vernon’s Central Elementary would be more than happy to enjoy the advantages of high efficiency boilers, as they went to the school, dressed in heavy and warm clothing, after an announcement by Superintendent Jeff Byrd, Vernon ISD, made an announcement on the 12th of February, Monday, regarding an issue in the school.

Central Elementary’s boiler is out of order since February 12, and students had to attend classes prepared for cold weather as a result. Byrd says that the issue was due to a leak in the school’s boiler system which led to its shutdown.

The boiler issue would, naturally, affect how the day of the school’s students would go, with changes made to their schedule in order to account for the boiler issue. Instead of eating in class, as usual, the students had their breakfast in the school cafeteria, which was kitted out with portable heaters. Following that, the students then headed to Wilbarger Memorial Auditorium for a movie.

Central Elementary Principal Kacy Hunter, says that they had to overhaul the school’s daily schedule for the time being, replacing the study hall, computer time and the extracurricular activities.

The school officials made the changes due to the fact that the school had no heat throughout the night of February 12, which meant that the school might be too cold for the students the following day.

Following their movie watching on the 13th, the students went back to the school for lunch, whilst maintenance workers checked the classrooms in order to make sure that their temperature wasn’t dangerous for the kids.

Principal Byrd says that the school is educating students, but not if it comes at the cost of their safety and security.

Byrd has revealed by the morning of February 13 that a replacement boiler was already on the way to the school, and, if schedule holds, the boiler will be there by February 16, Friday, which will put an end to the discussions about the advantages of high efficiency boilers, and help keep the kids warm.

Byrd encourages the kids to still be dressed in warm clothes, despite the warmer temperatures expected on the 14th and 15th of February.

NYCHA Developments To Get New Boilers

Published by:

An announcement was made by Mayor Bill de Blasio regarding an investment worth $200 million which is going to be used in changing old boilers as well as upgrading the heating systems in 20 different developments under the NYCHA. The plan is set to be completed before 2022. There are many different types of boilers and the ones used by the developments have been considered during the budget allotment.

The funding will be used on sites that require upgrade the most such as those experiencing severe heat and lack of hot water majority of the times. The program aims to replace old boilers and upgrade the heating controls to more modern ones. After the replacements and upgrades are completed, around 45,000 residents will be enjoying the new facilities.

Through the upgrade, NYCHA will be able to save an annual cost of $5 million which is spent on heating costs.

According to de Blasio, this program is similar to the investment they made when they replaced old roofs because it is geared towards solving one of the main problems of the residents of NYCHA. The management expects that thousands of residents will feel the improvement once it is completed. Due to the cold winter which is not like any before it, the old boilers as well as the pipes were subjected to extreme temperature. He added that they are trying to solve the main issues thus they are encouraging their partners, both in the state and federal level, to do similar.

For the fiscal years between 2014 and 2027, De Blasio has pledged to give $2.1 billion for the capital infrastructure of NYCHA while between fiscal years 2014 and 2022, the operations of the agency can expect a funding of $1.6 billion.

Alicka Ampry-Samuel, council member and Committee on Public Housing’s chairman, said that they are praising Mayor de Blasio for his decision and for prioritizing the residents of NYCHA. They recognized that a number of developments are facing challenges especially in different types of boilers and heating system. The $200 million will help them especially now that their funding has been reduced by the federal government.

NHS Approves The Use Of Cloud For Storing Medical Records

Published by:

When it comes to healthcare, cloud computing is making a name and it has served as medical director support as well as everyone in the healthcare industry is benefiting from it. NHS has already given its approval to use cloud computing in healthcare sector. In fact, a guide was already published with recommendations on how the healthcare industry can employ cloud computing. It also tackles data off shoring and its uses in keeping the important information of the patients. This is a big change in the policy because majority of the healthcare providers and facilities are still using on-site IT models.

This is the reason why NHS is quite behind compared to other sectors of the government in the United Kingdom. Starting 2013, cloud computing has been a priority by IT departments in the public sector.

Cloud computing is already utilized by organization such as Code4Health by the NHS England and NHS Choices but it the approval is considered a milestone because they already gave permission for the cloud computing to be used in a broader sense.

According to the new national guidance, it is mandated that all data should be kept inside the UK-European Economic Area which pertains to countries that follow the standards created by the European Commission in order to protect data. This also covers US services that are under the Privacy Shield of the data transfer deal.

According to MedConfidential, a medical privacy campaign organization, the Privacy Shield which was agreed by the United States and The European Union has received many criticisms including a number of data protections regulators in Europe. According to European officials, the arrangement was in order after they have conducted their first yearly review in 2017.

MedConfidential also said that the rules by MoD are quite strict because they ordered that cloud data should only be kept inside the UK network which is considered as a limitation. Therefore many providers including Microsoft, Amazon, Oracle, Google and IBM decided to construct their first cloud data facilities within Britain.

Nonetheless, the acceptance by the NHS will make things easier as cloud computing serves as medical director support and the organization aims to make sure that security is arranged from the local level to protect patient information.

Oklahoma Wonder What To Do With Drug Treatment

Published by:

The state of Oklahoma, back in 2016, had a vote on a heated ballot initiative, which would reclassify drug possession and minor thefts as misdemeanors. The ballot was then passed, with the initiative being approved.  As a result, the drug-crime policing of the Oklahoma state has lost its metaphorical stick.

The idea behind the change was to divert nonviolent drug users to the a USA rehab facility that can help them deal with their issue. Reports say that the voters was interested with the initiative due to rising prison costs, with Oklahama’s rate of incarceration being the second highest in the US, second only to Louisiana.

The reform was passed, in spite of the opposition of the state’s public prosecutors and law-enforcement agencies, and was outright rejected in many Oklahama rural counties. This reform followed the changes in other states, which include Louisiana itself, who are all looking for ways to avoid and outright end mass incarceration, in opposition to the Trump administration’s urging to federal prosecutors to further utilize incarceration as a punishment.

Adam Gelb, one of The Pew Charitable Trusts’ criminal-justice experts, says that it was logical for states to reform their drug sentencing due to data showing no definitive proof that shows that punitive laws actually curb abuse. He says that lock up drug offenders increases punishment, but not public health and safety, according to the numbers.

Oklahoma is still having debates regarding the efficiency of the reforms, with some, like Det. Capt. Adam Flowers of Canadian Country, saying that it has taken away the teeth of drug-arrests. Some of the opposition is saying that part of the problem is that there is no incentive for drug abusers to go to visit the closest USA rehab facility and get treatment.

The reformers, to counter, say that treatment is an option, it always has been. Gelb says that people with addictions are bad with long-term considerations, with the time spent in jail measuring the same to them. Some people from the inside say that it’s a better alternative due to how easy it is to get drugs behind bars.
