Easter Is A Busy Season For Rabbit Rescues

Published by:

Organizations geared towards the rescue of rabbits are busy since last week because they had to prepare for the incoming crowd of bunnies that will either be surrendered or left alone. This is a common occurrence every year after the Easter weekend is over.

According to the president of Hoppy Hearts which is based in London, Ontario, Kaylie Ngo, the busiest season for them in rescuing is between the months June and July. This is due to the high amount of discarded bunnies that were bought as gifts for children during the Easter season.

Ngo said that majority of the bunnies can be given as gifts as soon as they turned eight weeks old. In just a few months, the owners will be able to notice the changes in their personality.

Ngo added that it is common for rabbits to become hormonal and then they start to become active, much like teenagers. When this happens, they poop and pee a lot. They also fancy destroying different things.

According to a statement from Rabbit Rescue Inc.’s executive director based in Cambridge, Ontario, it is common for parents to purchase animals as gifts for their children but they do not know what it means or the responsibility it entails.

Haviva Porter-Lush explained that rabbits resemble cats and dogs when it comes to pet keeping which is different from taking care of hamsters or gerbils. For example, they are not recommended to be enclosed in small cages and it is advisable that they should have their own pen or room where they can move around on their own.

She also revealed that the cost of keeping a rabbit is similar to that of cats and dogs and this is something most pet owners don’t realize. They might think that it does not require high maintenance because it can be bought for as cheap as $30 but in a few months’ time they have to spend between $300 and $700 in order for the rabbit to be spayed.

This is the reason why parents are discouraged to gift rabbits but choose other personalized gifts instead that the child will be able to treasure for a long time.
