How To Make An Illustrated Map Interesting

Published by:

An illustrated map may be useful but it is not something that people would normally be interested in. people would only utilize maps when they are visiting a foreign place of if they are trekking or travelling to an area where they are not familiar with the terrain. Maps are important as they can easily guide the person and take him to his destination in less time. To make maps more interesting, you can create your own map and add some details to make them more appealing. Here’s how.

Familiarize the area

To make your map useful, familiarize the area. Gather accurate information and add it on the map. You can also utilize old maps and see how you can improve it by adding embellishments and suitable images. Choose the landmarks that you would add images on.

Emphasize the landmarks

Highlight the landmarks and popular points in the area then decorate them with colors or you can enlarge the illustrations on the landmarks for more emphasis. Aside from coloring the landmarks, you can use figures or shapes to highlight institutions such as parks, church, schools, etc. Be creative. That would be the key.

Choose the right colors

The illustrated map that you are going to create should be suitable to your target users. If the map is intended for professionals, use toned down type of colors to provide a more mature feel on your map. As much as possible, avoid using numerous shades of color and different colors on the map. However, if your target users are school children, a colorful map with cartoon illustrations would be just right. You can also provide creative emphasis on the landmark to make your map entertaining and at the same time, informative.

Keep your elements harmonious

Make your patterns and symbols coherent to avoid confusing the users. For instance, use the same pattern or symbol for same ideas such as roads or walkways. You can tell if your illustrated map is easy to use when even a young child can utilize the map’s functions. Use the same symbols for same institutions like schools or transport hubs.
