The Battle Against Tropical Diseases

Published by:

Due to the recent epidemics that were brought about by Ebola and Zika, the entire world has come to recognize that everyone is susceptible to the infectious diseases. There has always been a strong correlation between global health problems and people who are traveling in countries there is a presence of the infectious diseases because these infections can cross international borders through travellers who are carrying them.

In majority of the cases, the same methods are used in people who are travelling overseas with those who are local to the endemic. The main goal of the method is prevention that no one will be affected. This is what has always been done to protect people from biting insects such as mosquitoes which are known to spread infectious diseases like malaria. On a data from the World Health Organization, malaria is the reason why there are about 429,000 people who died from the disease in 2105 and it causes dengue which approximately affects more than 96 million people every year.

There are instances wherein prevention methods both on the travellers and the local sides are not administered in the same way. Travelers may get a vaccine which gives them a higher level of protection while locals may be given a vaccine to make sure there is herd immunity. It does not matter what the approach are used, what is recognized is that there is a difference in the protective methods that are used.

The best way to prevent the spread of the disease is to avoid being bitten. This means that the person will have to cover every exposed skin as much as possible, bed nets should be used when sleeping, destroy any breeding grounds as well as using insecticides and insect repellent.

Deet or N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide is a type of insect repellant that is commonly used since the 1950s and up to this day. Another common repellent used is the PMD which is extracted from the lemon eucalyptus plant and then it is manufactured through synthetic methods. For those who are not keen on using chemicals, there are other Australian insect repellent available in the market.
