A recent study has discovered that yo-yo dieting, or the reoccurring cycle of losing weight and gaining it, may just only result to more weight gain when the diet is completed.
The study, which was published in the Evolution, Medicine and Public Health journal, manifested that repeated dieting can be regarded by the brain like short famines. Because of this, the brain encourages the body to store additional fat for any future shortage. This results to repeated dieters gaining more weight in comparison to those that never diet.
Repeated dieting as short famines
Professor John McNamara from the University of Bristol’s School of Mathematics explained in a press release that their model displays that weight gain is not a malfunction of people’s physiology. He added that the brain can be working perfectly, however uncertainty regarding food supplies prompts an evolved reaction to gain more weight.
For the study, researchers did an analysis of mathematical models of animals, with birds as an example. These animals are aware when food is abundant and when it is also limited. However, they are unaware when it will go from being abundant to scarce. Because of this, the birds have to know about changeability prior to determining how fat they need to be.
With the researchers observing how animals responded to food storage declining, they understood why people, those under yo-yo diets, were likely to fail in their weight loss plans.
Since the brain regards a diet as a kind of food shortage, it encourages the body to take more food when a diet is finished.
In addition, the brain continually encourages the body to take more food as a diet progresses, and the urge to do so is less likely fulfilled since the brain is already convinced about famines reoccurring.
This is the reason that choosing a diet plan is very crucial. Unlike other diet supplements, an HCG supplement works to keep the weight off, since it re-tunes the body to take energy coming from the excess fat. It is a long term solution for weight loss even after the HCG diet is completed.
